Q. Is my child eligible to receive funding from the Foundation for diagnostic testing?

Yes – if your child sees a licensed pediatrician based in Hong Kong under the Hospital Authority who believes your child may have an orphan disease listed under our scope, and if your family meets the financial eligibility requirements from the Foundation.

No – if you do not meet any one of the above conditions. In this case, we may still be able to provide you with information on where you can seek help; please contact us by email or on our hotline.

Q. I believe my child is eligible to receive funding from the Foundation for a diagnostic test. How do I apply?
Ask your child’s pediatrician to complete our application procedure and send it together with the required documentation to us, as indicated on the form. We will contact the pediatrician directly to confirm receipt of the application and discuss eligibility.

Q. Our pediatrician has submitted an application. When will we know if it has been approved?
This will normally be completed within 3 to 6 months, depending on the information provided by your pediatrician. Moreover, the financial assessment will be performed by the medical social workers from the public hospital where your child has active follow-up. However, we will always endeavor to help minimize the timeframe where possible.

Q. Can the Foundation provide a medical opinion?
No – we can provide access to medical specialists in certain cases, but do not ourselves provide medical opinions or take responsibility for any opinions provided by such specialists with respect to the patient.

Q. My child has received a professional diagnosis, but I suspect it is not correct. Will the Foundation fund diagnostic tests for the purpose of a second opinion?
We will not fund diagnostic testing for the purposes of obtaining a second opinion. However, we may fund additional testing that is required to ascertain a more accurate diagnosis. Please contact us for further information.

Q. My child has been diagnosed, but we cannot afford the treatment--which is not covered by ordinary government hospitals. Can the Foundation help?
Funding ongoing treatment and palliative care on a broad scale is not within our scope at this time. However, we can provide information for organizations that may be in a position to help you. Please contact us for further information.
